The diversity of Indian spices

Spicy is the word that first jumps up to your mind when you taste Indian food for the first time is, delicious followed by the next word spicy. Indeed these two adjectives do give you the basic idea about Indian food that, it is deliciously spicy. Spices are an integral part of Indian cuisine. Just like other aspects of this country the spices too offer diversity. The number of spices that form the base of Indian cuisine are overwhelming, each is unique in flavor and taste. The spices that are used in the food here are used in whole, paste, powdered, crushed form. Sometimes an assortment of whole spices are roasted and then these are transformed into powdered form.

But the proportion of spices vary from dish to dish. There are certain dishes that do not add a lot of spices. In fact these light dishes are prepared with one or two spices. But these do taste awesome too. These common spices are mostly found in all parts of the country and they are more or less used in cuisines of different region. In fact you would also find use of spices in Indian beverages also. Masala chai is a popular version of Indian tea, where cinnamon, clove, cardamom, ginger are used to flavor the tea.


Indian spices are storehouse of medicinal properties. So you do not have to worry about their abundant use in the food. Each offers distinct benefit. Medicinal properties are found in spices like chili which has antioxidants, turmeric that has anti biotic properties, coriander seeds are good for digestion, ginger is good when you have cold. Just have ginger tea when you have cold and you will feel great. Not just that if you are suffering from cough then you could keep a little piece of raw ginger in your mouth and you need to chew it occasionally the juice that gets released is extremely beneficial for you. Turmeric is also used to enhance your complexion, the juice of baby onions is good for your hair too. So you see these spices not just make food scrumptious but also help you fight health problems and good for skincare and hair care too.
